In the ruins of 1945 Berlin, Susanne Wallner returns to her home after living in a concentration camp for three years only to find another man squatting in her apartment. At first Dr. Hans Mertens refuses to vacate her apartment; but after they come to a temporary understanding, the two begin to come to terms with the terrors of the past years. When Hans discovers that Ferdinand Brückner, his former commanding officer and a notorious war criminal, has also returned to Berlin, Hans and Susanne will have to learn to trust each other in order to confront the terrors of the present.
