German Zeitgeist at UW: Berlin Filmmaker Speaks with Students

Submitted by Ellwood Wiggins on

Berlin-based filmmaker Beatrice Möller visited the University of Washington in March 2014 to present her latest work Alles was wir wollen (2014). Her documentary portrays three female protagonists in their 30s and the question: what does it mean to be a woman these days? But the film goes above and beyond the idea of what women want. It is a portrait of a generation exposed to seemingly endless opportunities and chances to shape their lives. The challenge to define oneself out of this pool of options without getting lost in them is a significant marker of postmodern everyday life. Based on these issues, the filmmaker lead an engaging discussion with UW students about particular questions of identity-forming, life-altering decisions and their delayed onset within contemporary biographies. She furthermore shared a lot of insight about her own personal and professional development as well as the creative process of bringing a film project to life. After exploring Seattle’s coffee culture and the U District, the filmmaker joined us for the last event of our quarterly film event. The screening of Beatrice’s work within the context of our departmental German Film Series provided a wonderful platform to engage with students, faculty and Zeitgeist enthusiasts across all disciplines. We are grateful for being able to host so much creative talent and to cultivate an inviting intellectual environment.
