This course offers an introduction to German Cultural Studies today. A core course for the major, it asks how German culture has been defined and contested and how (and why) we study it. We will focus on some of the major areas of cultural analysis today (mobile communication society and modern celebrity culture; migration; ethics of food; relationship of humans and animals) by examining a number of key concepts along with pertinent materials from the German cultural tradition. The course goals include active learning through class discussion and team work. Readings and discussions are in English and German.
