Leaving Europe on the 'Berengaria', July 1936

In 1935, before the academic year at Minnesota was over, Hans received a two-year appointment as a George Fischer Baker fellow and instructor in the Chemistry Department of Cornell University. Regarding his professional future and his job prospects, Hans and Hilde felt confident enough to begin a new life in the New World. On June 3, 1936 Hilde and Hans married in Vienna. They arrived in New York on the “Berengaria” on July 21, 1936. They found a very nice home in Ithaca and bought their first car.

There was time to enjoy life. The summer of 1937 Hilde and Hans explored the beautiful surroundings of Ithaca. And in the winter there was skiing. For an Austrian being able to ski was a condition sine qua non. Hans was asked to coach the Cornell ski team but had to decline due to his preoccupation with research. He must have regretted his decision, since it would have been easy money: not a single snowflake fell during the entire season.

Hilde’s parents came to visit, arriving in San Francisco aboard a world cruise, which had taken them as far as Japan. They returned to Vienna at the end of summer.
