The Department is hosting the AATG exhibit First Encounters from October 7 - October 14 in our seminar room, DEN 359.
The American Association of Teachers of German invites you to investigate the continuing history of migration and its effects in shaping the German-American transatlantic friendship. From the beginnings of European immigration to North America, Germans have contributed to political, cultural, and social aspects of the US.
Those First Encounters took different forms depending on when and where German settlers arrived. Through a number of case studies, you are encouraged to explore these questions.
- What did the first encounters between German immigrants and local populations look like?
- How did Germans adjust to their new environment?
- How did Germans contribute to existing communities?
